Just another garden blog

Pleione Orchids

Just a quick, easy post, with the picture doing most of the work. I couldn’t resist taking a quick pic of these gorgeous, but obviously crowded Pleione orchids. Pleione are a terrestrial (ground growing) orchid which naturally occur mostly in China. Easy to grow and flower in Tasmania. The species pictured is Pleione formosana.

  1. Very nice orchids. Wonder would they grow in Melbourne?

  2. Oh wow! They’re beautiful! What conditions do they enjoy?

They grow fine under cover in the shadehouse. They lose leaves over winter. I water when they have leaves, and when they don’t have leaves, I don’t water.

  3. Noted! On the list!

  4. I am wondering where I can buy these, they are gorgeous.

Contacting your local orchid society would be your best bet. Members often have bulbs, divisions and extra plants for sale on meeting nights, during orchid shows, or even just for private sale. If you are in Tassie, each major population centre has an orchid society. If you are in Hobart, here is a link for the local society. http://tos.org.au.
